I wasn’t too thrilled when I remembered yesterday that I was supposed to act as an escort for a visiting diplomat this weekend. It’s another one of those things you never think about when you become a superhero. You have all sorts of public obligations that may get in the way of what you really want to do. Like stay in on your one day off and watch movies with your girlfriends while eating popcorn and mooning over how romantic those old black and white movies were.

Blowing things up is easy. Punching bad guys into walls is easy. Casting spells that hold your enemies in stasis, also easy. As is saving kittens from trees, little old ladies from bulldozers, and the UN from a bomb. These things are all, comparatively, easy. Not that I’m saying just anyone could do them. But they’re pretty straight forward.

I’ve never really understood bad guys. I confess. To me, it was always obvious that everyone should want to be a superhero. Who wouldn’t want to save people? Writing about dating got me thinking about what, ultimately, is the big underlying question. (Mind you, I still have more to say on the topic of dating, but today I’m feeling a bit more serious). Once upon a time, if you wanted to learn a craft, you apprenticed with a master in that craft. Want to be a carpenter? Sign on to study with a carpenter. Want to be a glassblower? Become a glassblower’s apprentice. In general, apprenticeship has fallen out of vogue today. However, superheroing is one of the few remaining fields where you can actually still apprentice with someone. If you want to become a superhero, become a sidekick!
